This road led from the *Porta Viminalis to a postern gate in the Aurelian Wall and then to Tibur. The postern gate was later walled up (hence the modern name Porta Chiusa), so it is thought that this road was only of minor significance (Patterson, Richardson). In the Augustan period, the main road to Tibur was probably that which led NE from the *Porta Esquilina (s.v. *Via Tiburtina). The name of the road from the Porta Viminalis is unknown (Pisani Sartorio). It is commonly called “Via Tiburtina Vetus” (Scagnetti, Platner–Ashby). This name, retained for convenience, reflects both its destination and its relative unimportance. Its course may be determined from Lanciani, FUR pls. 11, 17, with LTUR V, 357 fig. 89.
