Modern name of an ancient street which began in the *Colosseum Valley, passed through the deep valley between the *Palatium and *Caelius Mons, and probably continued to join the *Via Appia (Lanciani, FUR pl. 29, 35). Though the ancient name of this street is unknown, its antiquity and course are assured archaeologically with finds of street pavers (W. 5.77 m) flanked by travertine sidewalks, Republican-era drains, and several buildings that flanked the street (Schingo). One group of tabernae flanking the street had an opus reticulatum rear wall (though the rest is in early-Imperial brickwork); thus the Republican street may have been lined with shops (Schingo 157 V1). Once S of its intersection with the *Clivus Scauri, the archaeological data peters out, and the connection of the intramural street with the *Via Appia is entirely hypothetical.
