On the *Velia stood physical remains of a basement dating to the Republican period; discovered during the opening of Via dell’Impero, these ruins were destroyed in 1932 (Schingo). In the absence of archaeological or architectural clues, the function of the building remains unknown, but given its urban environment it may have been the basement of a private residence. Unearthed were walls of opus quadratum in tufa and travertine intersected by walls in opus incertum to form small vaulted chambers, as well as a double stairway (Schingo). There were two phases of pavement: the first in mosaic, the second in opus spicatum; these aspects of the structure suggest a Republican date (Schingo). After the Augustan era, these remains were cut by the rectangular cement podium of Neronian date (Colini), which Coarelli falsely associates with the Temple of *Tellus (Coarelli).
