Stepped ramp ascending the lower slope of the *Palatine at its NW corner; the ramp led from the *Forum Romanum to the level of the Imperial *Nova Via (only after Augustus was it extended further up the hill to the domus Tiberiana: Steinby). Remains of the Republican-era ramp in opus incertum have been recovered just W of the *Atrium Vestae, and they allow for its reconstruction as a series of alternating stairways and landings supported by vaulted substructures, in which tabernae (shops and stalls) were housed (Steinby, LTUR; ead. 1985). The ramp was convincingly associated with the toponym ‘Scalae Graecae’ (known from Servius, ad Aen. 4.646: Graecae scalae; cf. Ov., Fast. 6.395-98) by Coarelli (followed by Steinby). The ramp may also have been known as the *Scalae Anulariae (Steinby, Papi).
