The Republican headquarters of the Pontifex Maximus at the E end of the *Forum, which Roman tradition credited Numa with building (Ov., Fast. 6.264: tunc erat ... regia magna Numae, Tr. 3.1.30; Tac., Ann. 15.41: Numaeque regia; Solin. 1.21; Serv., ad Aen. 7.153, 8.363). The earliest remains date to the late 7th c. B.C., and already by the end of the 6th c. B.C. the Regia assumed its permanent shape as a trapezoidal courtyard with a connected group of three smaller rooms facing the *Atrium Vestae (Scott), the center room providing access from the street (Coarelli 59). The Regia burned once during the Triumviral period, in 36 B.C., but was restored by Cn. Domitius Calvinus (Dio Cass. 48.42.4; CIL VI 1301). The completed Temple of the Deified Julius Caesar seems to have provided the NE wall of the Regia with an arcuated porch (the Porticus Iulia?) which linked the two buildings (s.v. *Divus Iulius, Aedes).
