Gate in the *Servian Wall on the *Viminal, between the *Porta Collina and *Porta Esquilina. It connects the *Vicus Collis Viminalis with the *“Via Tiburtina Vetus”. The name ‘Porta Viminalis’ is established on the basis of Strabo 5.3.7 and Festus 156. Part of this gate has been discovered in front of the Termini train station (Aurigemma 19 fig. 1) in the shape of two converging walls in opus quadratum of peperino (from Gabii). These were part of the side walls of the gate (Coarelli), not just retaining walls for a trapezoidal opening in the *Agger (Aurigemma 35, De Angelis Bertolotti). The ground-plan may be reconstructed following Säflund (accepted by Richardson). A line of aqueducts (s.v. *Aqua Iulia, *Aqua Tepula, *Aqua Marcia) passed on the N side of the gate into the city (Frontin., Aq. 19.4-5).
