A gate in the Servian Wall (*Muri), which common agreement now places on the saddle between the *Arx and the *Quirinal. This was the terminus of the *Via Flaminia, which became the *“Clivus Argentarius” inside the city walls. Its position is defined by Livy (35.10.12), who mentions the *Porticus Aemilia (Campus Martius) that was built in 193 B.C. to connect this gate with the ara of *Mars in the *Campus Martius. It follows that the gate stood at some point where the ground immediately outside the wall was level enough to accommodate this portico (Säflund). A spring from which the porta may have taken its name rises nearby under the *Carcer (Richardson).
