Northernmost gate in the Servian Wall (*Muri), located on the *Quirinal. Leading up to the gate is the *Alta Semita, which branches into the *Via Salaria and *Via Nomentana just outside the wall. Remains of the gate were first unearthed in 1872 and re-explored in 1996 (Canevari, Lanciani, Fogagnolo, Cifani). The gate’s two long walls flanked the street and converged toward the city. They were reinforced by two bastions; Juvenal (6.291) and Sidonius Apollinaris (7.132) both refer to the tower of the porta. The *Agger extended on both sides of the gate, though significantly reduced in size to the N (s.v. *Agger; *Muri: Quirinalis). The origin of the name ‘Porta Collina’ is debated; Coarelli derives it from the collis Quirinalis, while Richardson evolves it from Regio Collina, one of the four divisions of the Republican city. The gate guarded the N approach to the city and was often under attack (Livy 7.11.6: haud procul porta Collina, 26.10.1-2; App., B Civ. 1.93).
