<p data-block-key="2ybz6">An Egyptian obelisk erected in the *<a href="https://digital.library.villanova.edu/Item/vudl:75216#?c=&amp;m=&amp;s=&amp;cv=109&amp;xywh=-2834%2C-252%2C12328%2C5837">Circus Maximus</a> by Augustus in 10 B.C.; it was dedicated to the sun-god *Sol, the deity to whom the Circus as a whole was consecrated (<a href="http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Tert.+Spect.+8&amp;fromdoc=Perseus%3Atext%3A2008.01.0571">Tert., <i>De spect.</i> 8</a>; Humphrey 94, 269). The obelisk was brought from Heliopolis and erected at the mid-point between the two <i>metae</i> (<a href="https://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/L/Roman/Texts/Isidore/18*.html">Isid., <i>Etym</i>. 18.31</a>; Humphrey 269-72, 291; Polzer); its ‘twin’ stood in the *Campus Martius and served in a monumental sundial (*“Horologium Augusti”). Inscriptions on the base of both monoliths cast them as explicit symbols of Augustus’ conquest of Egypt (<i>CIL</i> VI <a href="https://db.edcs.eu/epigr/bilder.php?s_language=en&amp;bild=$D_00091a.jpg;PH0003303;pp">701</a>-<a href="https://db.edcs.eu/epigr/bilder.php?s_language=en&amp;bild=$CIL_06_00702.jpg;$M_CIL_06_00701.jpg;pp">2</a>; <a href="http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0197%3Abook%3D17%3Achapter%3D1">Strabo 17.1.27</a>; <a href="http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus:abo:phi,0978,001:36:14">Pliny, <i>NH</i> 36.14</a>; <a href="http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Amm.+17.4.12&amp;fromdoc=Perseus%3Atext%3A2007.01.0081">Amm. Marc. 17.4.12</a>). The ancient base is <i>c</i>. 3 m square (D’Onofrio fig. 2); these dimensions provide the basis for our reconstruction on the map.
