Food market rebuilt by M. Fulvius Nobilior in 179 B.C. (Festus 112) near the *Forum Romanum and the busy commercial area of the *Argiletum (Varro, Ling. 5.146-47; Livy 40.51.5; Dio Cass. 62.19.1). The exact location of the Macellum was debated until Morselli and Tortorici identified architectural remains belonging to the structure. It is now securely placed behind the *Basilica Paulli in the region later occupied by the forum Transitorium and templum Pacis. The archaeological remains, however, are too scant to restore fully the Macellum’s ground-plan or elevation (Tortorici). An indication of the structure’s extent is provided by literary accounts which suggest that the macellum stretched from the Argiletum to the *Corneta, a small alley NE of the Basilica Paulli (for a complete list of textual references and analysis, see Pisani Sartorio, de Ruyt). Thus, the Macellum is reliably located and its length known; here we estimate the structure’s width in order to represent its urban volume.
