Commercial space on the S *Cispian. Appian’s description of a battle said to have taken place here in 88 B.C. between C. Marius and L. Sulla (App., B Civ. 1.58: περὶ τὴν Αἰσκύλειον ἀγορὰν) implies that the Forum Esquilinum was a large open space, located just inside the *Porta Esquilina. It is mentioned in several funerary inscriptions (CIL VI 2223, 9179, 9180: A FORO ESQVILINO). An inscription discovered by the Church of S. Vito, built on the site of the Porta Esquilina, mentions a forum restored by Fl. Eurycles Epitychianus in A.D. 450 (CIL VI 1662=31888). The findspot of this inscription suggests that the Forum Esquilinum stood inside the Porta Esquilina, N of the *Clivus Suburanus. The *Macellum Liviae, which was built outside the Porta Esquilina during the Augustan period, confirms the commercial nature of this area. Current consensus (Coarelli, Häuber, Richardson) places the Forum Esquilinum inside the Porta Esquilina, N of the Clivus Suburanus. An older, less convincing view puts it S of the Clivus Suburanus (Platner–Ashby) or even, contra Appian, outside the *Servian Wall (Lanciani, FUR pl. 23).
