Remains of an extremely long-lived residence have been located beneath S. Pudenziana on the *Viminalis. Though most of the walls date to the 2nd c. A.D., a portion in opus reticulatum, as well as substantial remains of late-Republican or Augustan mosaics, suggest a residence of the early-Augustan era (Petrignani, Krautheimer). One room preserves indications of an earlier pavement of hydraulic cement with inserted fragments of colored marble (Petrignani); Coarelli dates this floor to the 2nd c. B.C., which suggests the residence was continuously inhabited for c. 400 years. Milella neglects these earlier phases, and places all the remains below the church in the 2nd c. A.D.
