Residence of the pontifex maximus located on the *Sacra Via (Suet., Iul. 46: in Sacra via domo Publica), just E of the *Atrium Vestae (Dio Cass. 54.27.3) and W of the wealthy residential zone on the lower N *Palatine. In 12 B.C. Augustus moved the residence of the pontifex maximus to the SW Palatine, and donated the Domus Publica to the Vestal Virgins (Dio Cass., loc. cit.). After re-investigating the ruins long-associated with the Domus Publica, Carettoni arrived at a fragmentary atrium-house plan (346-55). A wall of Republican date divided the domus from the Atrium Vestae and formed its W boundary (Carettoni 338). To the N, a line of tabernae (small shops) opening onto the Sacra Via separated the residence from the street itself (Carettoni 349). A vestibule nestled between two of these shops provided access to the Domus Publica from the Sacra Via (Carettoni 346). The S and E limits of the house remain unknown (Scott 166); those shown on our map were generated on the principle of symmetry.
