A travertine altar inscribed CONC]ORD[IAE] AVG SACR and a massive travertine base (1.58 x 1.62 m), most likely for a statue, were found in situ at the *Forum Bovarium in 1939 (Colini, for the inscription: 57, 59 fig. 2); the findspot is close by the *Cloaca Maxima and just E of the major N–S traffic artery along the Forum Bovarium (for a map: Cressedi 257). The altar and base have been convincingly interpreted as the remains of a compital shrine (Colini 62, followed by Cressedi 272; cautiously accepted by Richardson; cf. *Compitum: S. Martino ai Monti) and attributed to the Augustan period (Colini 67-68, Cressedi 272); based on his fieldwork in this area, Coarelli derives the Augustan-era ground level in this part of the Forum Bovarium from the elevation of the shrine (c. 10 m above his defined Tiber level; cf. *Tiberis: Grand Embankment). As a compitum, the shrine is an important testimony for the existence of residential quarters in this area, which must have demarcated the W border of the forum (whose extent, especially its S perimeter, is still disputed: s.v. Forum Bovarium). Our map marks the findspot of the shrine and assumes built-up areas only to the W of the adjacent N–S road, though quarters to the E cannot be excluded.
