Open area on the *Caelius Mons occasionally used for ludi (games) and public festivals (Ov., Fast. 3.517-22; Cic., Pis. 25.61; Paulus in Festus 117: Martialis campus in Caelio monte); on analogy with the *Campus Viminalis, this campus (field) is thought to have been located outside the *Servian Wall (Buzzetti, Colini). This area should probably be identified with the CAMPVS CAELIMONTANVS, a toponym attested by a single funerary inscription: CIL VI 9475 (Buzzetti; Colini). Colini has convincingly argued that the campus was located on the site of the present-day piazza of S. Giovanni in Laterano, based in part upon the toponym for a now-lost church that stood in the area, S. Gregorio in Martio. Since the extent of this open area remains unknown, it can only be indicated by an index number on our map.
