A row of tabernae (shops and stalls) over 40 m long was excavated in 1989-91 on the E slope of the *Caelian well outside the Servian Wall (Pacetti 458-59). The heavy reticulate rear wall of the shops served to retain the hillside. The remains suggest that each shop was c. 5 m wide and 7 to 10 m deep, with the larger ones divided into two rooms. The roofing technique remains unknown, as does the full extent of the row, since it may continue at both ends. These shops, along with an adjacent residence, define the axis of an Augustan-era street (for details, s.v. *Domus: Caelius Mons [1], Caelius Mons).
