Remains of a Republican portico found near S. Alessio on the NW *Aventine, close to the ancient street under Via di S. Sabina (s.v. *Vicus Armilustri); two walls of “yellow tufa” blocks, perpendicular to each other (one L. c. 19 m), were uncovered by Lanciani in the garden just NE of the church (1893; id., FUR pl. 34). At the intersection of these two walls stood a marble column atop a travertine slab. These remains have been plausibly addressed as a portico, and attributed to the late-Republican period (Lanciani 1893). Recently, Vendittelli (1990, 164; cf. ead. 1988, 108) proposed that this portico be identified with the colonnades in the precinct of the Temple of *Diana Aventina; this, however, is based on the inconclusive placement of Diana’s temple near S. Alessio (for details, s.v. Diana Aventina, Aedes). Our map accepts the structure as relevant for our time frame and marks its location.
